As you all already know, Barcelona is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Millions of tourists are visiting this city every year, but there is something more than the tourist attractions that makes Barcelona so charming. An Erasmus mobility is a chance of exploring this city beyond its tourist attractions. How is Barcelona seen through the eyes of an Erasmus student? What makes it so special about studying and living in this city?

When I think about Barcelona, the first words that come in my mind are good weather, great beaches, tasty food, warm, happy people and a lot of cultural places. When I have arrived there, I discovered more than that.

My first contact was with the people from my university, the one I chose for my mobility – Universitat Oberta de Catalunya. UOC is an online university, a platform that provides the student with the tools he needs in order to improve his knowledge: from organized courses, online library, forums and blogs, to well-prepared teachers, mentors and constant support…a very useful system, in my opinion, because it gives the student the freedom to organize his time as he wants, making him responsible in the same time.

The study experience was very different and enriching for me. I have not only had contact with a new teaching system, but I have also gained a lot of knowledge from the courses I took part in, which were really well organized and put emphasis on the practical part of the studying, which was actually missing in my preparation.

But this experience would not have been complete without the contact with the international people and the activities that we did together. All fascinated by the charming city, we enrolled in the discovery of every little part of it: from cultural and touristic places to activities on the beach, trips, shops, parties and tasting the Spanish cuisine. Our favorite part was by far the gastronomic experience. We have tried every single dessert, every market, every restaurant and we can surely call us now a good food guide of Barcelona.

We went together to vintage markets, we did shopping between the small streets, we cooked together, we played games, we enjoyed the beach, the parks, the parties and the good cafes of the city. We went in trips together, like the ones in Andorra, Valencia, Girona or Montpellier. We hiked the Montserrat mountain and we went to Tibidabo. We learned a little bit from each other’s language and we had friends who came to visit us. Me, for example, I have learned a little bit of Greek from my Cypriots friends and I have also had the chance of visiting a friend in Lisbon, who was in another Erasmus mobility there.

In my opinion, the Erasmus experience is about travelling, making international friends, getting to know each other’s culture, discovering new perceptions and beliefs, see the life with different eyes, and, in what concerns Barcelona, it is all about the relaxing walks between the old streets of Gothic Quarter or in the famous historical squares, about the small designers shops lost between the tiny streets, about feeding the pigeons in Plaza Catalunya, meditating on a bench in the port, watching the surfers on the beach, having a picnic in Parc de la Ciutadella or in Parc Güell, tasting the creative dessert shops, having a tasty brunch with friends or simply enjoying a good latte in the cozy cafes in a sunny morning…

Besides the impressive cultural places that Gauíi gave to this city, Barcelona, with its sunny weather, gives you the air of holiday, the joy of living, the taste of freedom, the excitement of exploring and the comfort of enjoying yourself and the little pleasures of everyday life.

As an Erasmus student, Barcelona will be your playground, the university your studio, the colleagues your game partners and you, the principal player of your Erasmus mobility game…
